School activity supported by City of Swansea Rowing Club Coaches

City of Swansea Rowing Club Coaches currently support two schools in the area with their rowing activity.

Birchgrove Secondary School in Swansea and Rhos County Primary School in Neath Port Talbot have started a winter indoor rowing programme with selected year groups.

The activity has proved very popular with 16 Yr 6 pupils attending regularly over the winter from Rhos and 12 pupils from Birchgrove increasing to around 16 towards the end of the season. We are greatful to concept 2 for their assistance with loaned equipment for this project.

Both schools are planning 'have a go' sessions on the water with City of Swansea RC in appropriate boats for the children.

The coaches follow a schools programme devised by the Amateur Rowing Association that incorporated goals for the children to work toward. The course in Rhos was modified from the ARA programme to account for the younger age of the pupils.

The Schools have also been competing in the Concept 2 schools league and Birchgrove are doing especially well check out thier progress for the boys and girls teams. Birchgrove also took part in the Welsh Junior Indoor Rowing Championships in December after only 5 weeks training. There were some notable achievements find the results here.

City of Swansea RC and the City and County of Swansea Education Authority now have a tutor trained to teach indoor rowing techniques to the teachers in the county. Thanks to the Welsh Amateur Rowing Association for their support in funding this qualification.
